Georgia O’Keeffe was born on November 15, 1887, in the town of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She started with art training in 1905, from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and later from the Art Students League of New York.
In 1908 she worked as an illustrator and teacher for two years to fund her education. She got married to Alfred Stieglitz after having an affair with him for a couple of years. He was a photographer and an art dealer.
And both of them developed a professional and personal relationship that resulted in their marriage.
He took several pictures of her and displayed them, most of which were nude. It created a public sensation and made most of people believe that Georgia’s work had undercurrents of sexuality, which was considered taboo back in those times.
Many people also believed that the flowers present in Georgia’s paintings symbolized female genitalia, which she bluntly denied.
In 1933, Georgia went through a nervous breakdown after knowing about her husband’s affair with someone else.
Later, after the death of her husband, she bought a ranch house and shifted to New Mexico permanently, and spent the last years of her life in Santa Fe.
Eleven years after her death, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum was established in Santa Fe to dedicate the artistic legacy of Georgia O’Keeffe.
